How it works for 2026
For the 2026 recruitment cycle, the Merit Index serves as a common denominator. Since different engineering branches (Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, etc.) take different papers, the Index allows RRB to create a unified merit list for posts that accept multiple disciplines.
Important Note on Normalization:
If the exam is conducted in multiple shifts for a single group, the raw marks are first normalized using the standard RRB normalization formula before being plugged into the M variable above.

No. The Merit Index is a standardized score, not a rank. Your final rank is determined by comparing your Merit Index against all other candidates in the same category and post.
Which exam stage is used to calculate the Merit Index?
For RRB JE, the Merit Index is calculated using CBT 2 marks. CBT 1 is only used for shortlisting candidates for CBT 2 and does not directly count towards the final Merit Index.
